Apple Watch 4 Not Reading Heart Rate
Gear up Apple Watch heart rate monitor!
About six months ago I noticed that my Apple tree Watch wasn't consistently reading my heart rate during running workouts. The picket started displaying "measuring" my heart beat out for minutes (see Figure 1), especially at the start of a run. Sometimes the eye rate monitor stopped working to such an extent that I couldn't even get a few readings during a 25-minute run (see Figure 2). I beloved my Apple tree Watch only information technology was time to ready my Apple Watch eye rate monitor.
After doing some inquiry, here's what I've curated from various net sources, summarized in 1 convenient place.
The first matter to determine is whether your watch's heart rate monitor is working at all!
If your Picket completely stops reading heart rate during workouts
Check the following settings on your watch.
—On your iPhone, go to Settings > Privacy > Motility & Fitness and check that both Fettle Tracking and Health are On.
—Open up your iPhone'south Spotter app and:
- Go to General and make sure that Workout Power Saving Mode is Off.
- Side by side, get to Privacy and check that both Heart Rate and Fitness Tracking are bothOn.
- Finally, go to Passcode and bank check that Wrist Detection is On.
If any of these settings are incorrect, they will forbid your watch from reading your heart rate during a workout. Gear up them correctly, and test your picket over again.
If your Watch is flaky reading centre rate during workouts
—Make clean the sensors on the back. The two that read your heart rate during exercise are the white LEDs at iii and nine o'clock that you may have noticed flashing green from fourth dimension to time.
—Make sure that the picket is snug on your wrist.
—Apple says that common cold weather weather condition can make reading your middle rate less reliable. If the flakiness of your heart rate monitor seems to be worse on cold days, try wearing warmer habiliment on the arm where information technology's attached.
—If your centre rate monitor is still flaky, try the approved Apple tree resetting options listed hither.
Ane workaround to try
[Updated on Apr 16, 2020] While running today I idea of a workaround that I believe is worth trying.
When y'all're not running the Activeness app, an Apple Watch merely reads your heartbeat every ten minutes. 1 possibility is that — due to unknown circumstances — during the first few minutes of your practice, your eye rate is irresolute besides fast for the watch to accurately measure it. Since the watch's Heart Rate app turns on the constant heart rate monitor, try the following:
Before you commencement your exercise routine, select the Middle Rate app and wait until it shows you lot your heart rate before starting the Activeness app and your exercise.
Since my spotter is at present OK I can't test this, but perhaps it volition work for y'all. Please share your experience in the comments.
What to do when none of the above helps
I tried all of the suggestions above. However, I was skeptical that any of them would work, because I'd seen a slow degeneration in the reliability of my watch to read my heartbeat while using my sentry for the aforementioned workout over the same route for months.
I concluded that my watch heart rate sensor was defective. Luckily my Apple tree Watch Series 3 was all the same covered by AppleCare. I took it in to our local Apple tree Premium Service Provider. Every bit I expected, defective Apple Watches are returned to Apple tree for repair or replacement. Before sending information technology back, I unpaired the Watch from my iPhone (important!), which backs up the Watch contents to the phone.
After a week turnaround, Apple tree sent back a new replacement watch. It was a niggling strange not wearing a picket for a week, and information technology was interesting to run across the limited workout data provided by my iPhone compared to what I was used to from my watch.
I'm happy to report that the replacement sentry now works perfectly during my conditioning. Figure three shows the continuous heart rate nautical chart shown past the new watch. And Effigy iv compares typical charts from the former and new watch.
Conclusion
Many people accept reported that the heart rate sensors on an Apple tree Scout accept get unreliable. Unfortunately it seems that the watch heart rate sensors tin dethrone over fourth dimension, and the various "fixes" suggested online might not always exist successful. I was lucky that AppleCare still covered my watch. I don't know what Apple would charge for an out-of-warranty fix or replacement. If yous don't have warranty coverage, I suggest politely pointing out that this defect seems to be widespread, and asking whether Apple will replace your scout anyhow. Good luck!
Please feel free to share any other fixes, suggestions, or experiences with this problem you'd like to add together in the comments below!
